Stuff vs Clutter

De-cluttering is a key aspect of Home Staging! De-cluttering your home can be a very stressful experience. Once you start, you quickly find out that how difficult it is to determine the difference between “Stuff” and “Clutter”. Typical recommendations are that you store or dispose of ½ of your stuff & clutter. Then do it again.

Let’s define these words.

Stuff are things that have a home, are loved or can make you money. Stuff makes us feel good, satisfied and happy.

Clutter has no home, is not loved or can’t make you money. It makes us feel overwhelmed.

Start de-cluttering your possessions early. Downsizing takes time to get the maximum value and minimize disposal costs. Organize what you want to keep, ask others what they want, don’t assume what to give away and keep. Limited pick up time to those that have asked you to save something for them. Do it when you are able to physically do it, don’t wait for a rainy day

Ask not Trash! One client said: “My sister was heartbroken that we threw out my grandmother's manual typewriter. It never occurred to us that she would want it. Now whenever my parents start to throw something out, I suggest they check with my siblings. They thought that was a good idea as long as the recipient comes and takes the item.”

How do I de-clutter?

- Take Baby steps - One drawer, shelf, cupboard at a time!

- Set a timer - You can do anything for 15 minutes!

- Quick! Throw away 15 clutter items!

- Rescue an area - 15 minutes and 15 minutes only!

Try to de-clutter an area today. It will make you feel better and you will get the satisfaction that you finally did it!

I would love to hear what has worked for you. Stay in touch.
